Dr. Bürklin Wolf makes this dry Riesling from the Ruppertsberg village vineyards in Germany’s Pfalz, farmed biodynamically. It is bright and mineral, with lemon, green apple and white peach over a saline core.
Description
Dr. Bürklin Wolf traces back to 1597 and is one of the largest and most important estates in Germany, with 85 hectares in the prime Mittelhaardt sector of the Pfalz. This dry, single varietal Riesling comes from the village vineyards around Ruppertsberg, farmed biodynamically since 2001 to preserve the life and depth of the soils. The Pfalz sits in the rain shadow of the Haardt hills, a relatively warm and dry corner of Germany, and the sandstone and limestone soils here give Riesling a firm mineral backbone and a subtle salinity. There is no oak: the wine is made to show fruit and site. Riesling's naturally high acidity and low alcohol are the key to its balance and its ability to age. The colour is pale with green tints. The nose is bright and precise, with lemon and green apple over white peach, white flowers and a hint of honey. The palate is dry, taut and mineral, with a citrus drive and a saline, stony finish that reflects the terroir. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. Its acidity and low alcohol make it a fine match for spiced dishes.
