Altavins Viticultors makes Domus Pensi in D.O. Terra Alta from Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Peluda, Syrah and Merlot. A structured red from old vines on calcareous soil, with dark fruit, spice and firm tannin.
Description
Domus Pensi is a red blend from D.O. Terra Alta in southern Catalonia, made by Altavins Viticultors from Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Peluda, Syrah and Merlot. The vines are over 30 years old and grow on calcareous, silty soils that are low in organic matter and slow to drain, conditions that restrict vigour and give intense, aromatic fruit. The warm, windy Terra Alta climate ripens the Cabernet and Syrah fully while the local Garnacha Peluda adds freshness. After a hand harvest the wine spends fourteen months in French oak, followed by a further two years in bottle; the oak ageing softens the firm tannins and adds cedar and spice through slow oxygen exchange, while the bottle time knits the blend together. The colour is deep ruby. The nose shows ripe plum and red currant, black pepper, tobacco and dark chocolate. The palate is full bodied and structured, with firm, ripe tannin, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish. Serve at 17 degrees and decant ahead. It suits roast beef, lamb and game.
