Gonzalez Byass makes Dominio Fournier Crianza from Tempranillo grown along the Duero in Ribera del Duero. Aged 12 months in barrel, it shows juicy black fruit, violet and a hint of black liquorice over firm structure.
Description
Dominio Fournier farms in Ribera del Duero, on land beside the Duero that the winery, founded in 1960, was working before the appellation existed. Many of its 50 hectares are bush trained, an old style that limits yields and concentrates the fruit. The high plateau sits at altitude, where hot days and cold nights create a wide diurnal range that ripens Tempranillo fully while holding acidity and tannin. The stony riverside soils add freshness and grip. This Crianza spends 12 months in barrel, enough oxygen exchange to soften the tannins and lend vanilla and a light smoky spice while keeping the fruit lively and forward. Tempranillo here brings deep colour, dark fruit and a firm frame. The wine is dense ruby, the nose leading with juicy black fruit, violet and a touch of black liquorice. The palate is structured and fresh, the tannins present but approachable, the finish savoury and clean. Younger and more fruit driven than the Reserva, it is ready to enjoy now. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits grilled meats, roast pork and hard cheese.
