Dominio del Challao reinterprets classic Rioja from Tempranillo and Garnacha, farmed biodynamically. Aged twenty-four months in large foudres and six in bottle, it is structured and savoury, with ripe red fruit, gentle oak spice and an earthy, mineral depth.
Description
Dominio del Challao is a project shared by Manu Michelini, of the Argentine winemaking family, and local viticulturist Carlos Fernandez, working in La Rioja with the aim of reinterpreting the great Riojas of the 1970s and 1980s in a contemporary, terroir-focused way. This red is built on Tempranillo and Garnacha grown biodynamically. Rioja's mix of clay-limestone and alluvial soils, its continental climate tempered by Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, and the wide day-to-night temperature range give the wine balance, freshness and structure. The wine is aged twenty-four months in large oak foudres, whose lower surface-to-volume ratio allows slow, gentle oxidation that softens tannin and integrates spice without the heavy vanilla of small new barrels, followed by six months in bottle. The result is a classic, savoury Rioja: bright red in the glass, with aromas of ripe cherry, red berries and plum, subtle vanilla and oak spice, and developing notes of earth, tobacco and leather. The palate is medium to full bodied, with fresh acidity, fine tannin and a long, mineral finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted, in a large glass.
