Description
Viñas Viejas de Soria is a red from Dominio de Es, made in Atauta in the Soria stretch of Ribera del Duero. This is the eastern, higher end of the appellation, where altitude and a cool continental climate give a wide diurnal range, slowing ripening and holding aromatic detail and acidity. The wine is built on Tinto Fino, the local Tempranillo, from old vines on sandy soils that drain freely and tend to produce perfumed, finer-boned reds than the appellation's heavier sites. Farming is respectful and low intervention. Ageing runs to 20 months in French oak, a long élevage that integrates tannin and adds slow oxygen exchange and structure rather than heavy toast. The colour is deep ruby. The nose is complex, with blackberry and plum over cherry, dried herbs, earth and a touch of liquorice. The palate is medium to full, with fine tannin, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish that reflects the sandy, high-altitude terroir. The wine gains depth with air. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, and decant an hour ahead. Good with roast lamb, grilled beef or a mushroom dish.
