Dominio de Atauta grows Tinto Fino at the head of the Atauta valley in Ribera del Duero, with vines reaching 940 metres. Aged twenty two months in barrel, Dos Fincas shows ripe plum, blackberry and spice over a firm frame.
Description
Dominio de Atauta works at the upper end of the Atauta valley in Ribera del Duero, where Tinto Fino, the local Tempranillo, grows on some of Spain's highest red wine vineyards. Dos Fincas draws on two sites, La Roza Grande and San Juan Valle, with old vines climbing to 940 metres on clay soils over decomposed limestone. The extreme altitude and continental climate, with hot days and very cold nights, create a wide diurnal range that ripens the fruit fully while preserving acidity and freshness. The grapes are hand harvested, double sorted and gravity fed to protect the fruit. The wine ages twenty two months in barrel, a long élevage in which slow oxygen exchange resolves the firm tannin and folds in spice and toast around the dark fruit core. The colour is deep cherry. The nose shows ripe plum and blackberry with spice, vanilla and a mineral lift. The palate is full bodied and structured, with firm tannin, bright high altitude acidity and a long finish. Serve at sixteen to eighteen degrees and decant. It suits roast lamb, grilled beef and game.
