Dominio de Anza is Diego Magaña’s Bierzo project at Valtuille de Abajo, made in Raúl Pérez’s cellar. This Mencía spends eight months in oak and shows fresh raspberry, plum and a stony, floral lift from the region’s slate soils.
Description
Dominio de Anza is the Bierzo project of Diego Magaña, a young Navarrese winemaker from the family behind Bodegas Viña Magaña, with experience in Bordeaux, Burgundy, Argentina and Chile. He makes the wine at Valtuille de Abajo using the cellar of Raúl Pérez, who first encouraged him to work in El Bierzo. The Selección de Parcelas comes from old Mencía vines on the slate and schist soils that define the district. Bierzo sits in a sheltered basin in the far north west of Castilla y León, where Atlantic and continental climates meet and a wide day to night temperature swing slows ripening, holding acidity and the bright floral aromatics that mark good Mencía. Ageing is restrained, eight months in oak barrels, enough to round the tannins without covering the fruit. The wine is deep violet. The nose shows fresh raspberry, red cherry and plum over a stony, slightly floral note and a turn of black pepper. The palate is medium bodied, with supple tannin, juicy red fruit and an earthy, mineral finish that reflects the slate. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. It suits roast pork, grilled poultry and lighter cuts of beef.
