Domenico Clerico made this Barolo from Nebbiolo grown around Monforte d’Alba, in the Langhe in Piedmont. Aged in barrel for structure, it is pale and firmly tannic in classic style, with red cherry, dried rose, tar and a savoury, earthy depth.
Description
Domenico Clerico was one of the winegrowers who reshaped Barolo from his base in Monforte d'Alba, in the Langhe in Piedmont, and this is the estate's flagship expression of Nebbiolo. The vineyards lie on the Monforte hillsides, where the soils are a mix of limestone-rich clay and sandstone marl and the high, well-exposed sites enjoy a wide day-to-night temperature range. That diurnal swing is central to Nebbiolo, fixing its high acidity, firm tannins and floral, perfumed aromatics. The wine is aged in barrel, where slow oxygen exchange through the wood gradually polishes Nebbiolo's powerful tannins and adds depth without masking the fruit. The farming is carried out with respect for the land. It pours the pale garnet that is the hallmark of the grape. The nose is textbook Barolo: red cherry, dried rose, tar, liquorice and leather over a savoury, earthy base. The palate is full bodied and firmly structured, with bright acidity, red fruit and a long, mineral, savoury finish that rewards time in the cellar. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanting well ahead. It calls for braised and roast meats, game and truffle.
