Description
Domenico Clerico farms in Monforte d'Alba, in Piedmont's Langhe hills in north-west Italy, better known for Nebbiolo but long-standing Barbera country too. Trevigne is a Barbera d'Alba, and Barbera is defined by naturally high acidity and low tannin, which give it freshness and a food-friendly cut even at a ripe 14.5% alcohol. The Langhe's calcareous marl soils and warm days with cool nights build ripe fruit while holding that bright acidity in place. This wine is raised in stainless steel rather than oak, an inert vessel that keeps the fruit primary and the acidity crisp, showing the grape and the vintage without wood flavour or added tannin. The colour is deep, vivid red. The nose is red cherry, raspberry and plum, with a savoury, earthy undertone and a touch of pepper. The palate is fresh and juicy, with bright acidity, soft tannin, red currant fruit and a clean, savoury finish. Serve it at 15 to 16C. Barbera's acidity makes it a natural partner for tomato-based dishes, and it also suits grilled meats and cured pork.
