Description
Domaine Vacheron is a family estate in Sancerre, run across three generations and now by two brothers with two of their children involved, farming forty-seven hectares biodynamically. Sancerre is most famous for Sauvignon Blanc, but its cooler eastern Loire climate and limestone and flint soils also suit Pinot Noir, giving a lighter, more mineral style than Burgundy. The estate's reputation rests on purity and definition, and this red is made as a single variety Pinot Noir, aged in barrel so the oak frames rather than dominates. The limestone gives freshness and a stony, savoury edge, while biodynamic farming and careful cellar work keep the fruit clear and unforced. The colour is a bright, translucent ruby. The nose shows red cherry, cranberry and rose petal, with a flinty, earthy note. The palate is light to medium bodied, with fine tannins, brisk acidity and a mineral, savoury finish. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees in a large bowled glass. It suits duck, roast poultry and mushroom dishes.
