Description
Domaine Tempier is the reference point for Bandol, the Provence appellation where Mourvedre reaches its fullest expression. This red is led by that grape, biodynamically farmed on the sun-trapping limestone and clay restanques, the terraced slopes that climb back from the Mediterranean. Mourvedre is a late-ripening variety that needs heat and a long season to come good, and the hot coastal climate combined with these stony, well-drained soils delivers the ripeness and firm tannin that give Bandol its structure and ageing potential. Eighteen months in concrete vats rather than new oak lets the wine settle and soften while keeping the fruit pure and the tannin intact, with no wood spice laid over the top. Expect a deep ruby to garnet colour and a nose of dark plum, red berries and the wild garrigue herbs of the south, thyme and rosemary, over black pepper, liquorice and a savoury, earthy depth. The palate is bold and structured, firm in tannin with real freshness and a long, leathery, mineral finish that rewards a little age. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanted, in a large glass. It calls for roast lamb and grilled meats.
