Domaine Tempier is the benchmark estate of Bandol, in coastal Provence. This biodynamic rose leads on Mourvedre, here called Monastrell, with Cinsault and white Grenache, fermented in concrete for a pale, dry wine of red berry fruit, stony minerality and savoury herb.

Description
Domaine Tempier in Bandol has set the standard for Provencal rose for generations, since Lucien Peyraud replanted the estate to Mourvedre after the war. The vines sit on limestone and clay terraces above the Mediterranean, where the maritime climate and constant sun ripen the late maturing Mourvedre, the grape Spain knows as Monastrell, blended here with Cinsault and white Grenache. Sea breezes and poor, stony soils keep yields low and concentrate the fruit. The wine is fermented and held in concrete rather than oak, an inert vessel that preserves freshness, primary fruit and the wine's saline cut without adding wood character. Biodynamic farming and gentle handling keep the colour pale and the aromatics clean. The result is a delicate salmon pink rose. The nose shows red berries, white peach and citrus peel over wild herbs, with a floral lift of rose. The palate is dry and taut, with bright acidity, a savoury thread of sage and thyme and a distinctly saline finish that reflects the coastal site. This is a rose for the table rather than the aperitif hour. Serve at 10 degrees, in a white wine glass.
