Domaine Santa Duc farms this Gigondas biodynamically from a walled plot behind the old town, planted on limestone hills among pine groves. The Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah blend spends eighteen months in amphorae and barrel, showing rose, raspberry and a peppery, herbal lift.
Description
Domaine Santa Duc makes Clos Derrière Vieille in AOC Gigondas, in the southern Rhône, from a secluded vineyard set behind the old town among limestone hills and pine groves. The estate works biodynamically and to organic standards. The blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah grows on stony limestone soils that drain freely and reflect daytime heat, while cool nights off the surrounding hills slow ripening and hold acidity, which keeps the floral side of Grenache intact. Ageing runs eighteen months split between amphorae and barrel. The amphora portion allows slow oxygen exchange without adding wood flavour, preserving fruit purity and giving a fine, mineral texture, while the barrel softens the Mourvèdre tannins and adds depth. The wine is deep ruby, with a nose of rose, raspberry and red cherry over black pepper, dried Provençal herbs and a stony earthiness. The palate is full but lifted, with ripe red and dark fruit, firm but rounded tannins and a savoury, liquorice-edged finish. Serve at sixteen to eighteen degrees, ideally decanted an hour ahead. It suits roast lamb, grilled beef and game dishes.
