Domaine Rostaing makes this Côte-Rôtie from Syrah grown on the steep schist terraces of the northern Rhône. Aged in wood, the Ampodium shows blackberry, black pepper, violet and smoked meat over firm, fine tannin.
Description
Domaine Rostaing has made wine in Côte-Rôtie since 1971, when René Rostaing began farming family plots with the aim of expressing terroir as fully as possible. Ampodium draws on parcels across the appellation in the northern Rhône, where Syrah grows on the steep schist and mica-schist terraces above the river. The slopes face south and east and hold heat, while the cooler continental climate and the poor, free-draining stone give Syrah here its perfume and pepper rather than sheer weight. The wine is aged in wood, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannin and adds a savoury frame without masking the fruit. The colour is deep purple. The nose is intense, with blackberry and cassis, cracked black pepper, violet and a smoked, gamey note typical of northern Rhône Syrah. The palate is full and concentrated, the tannins firm but fine grained, the acidity keeping it fresh through a long, peppery finish. Decant an hour ahead and serve at around 17 degrees. It suits roast and grilled red meats, game and dishes with a peppery or smoky edge.
