Domaine Philippe Alliet is a benchmark estate in Chinon, in the Loire, making this Tradition from Cabernet Franc. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, it stays fresh and pure, with redcurrant, raspberry and the leafy, gravelly character of the grape.
Description
Domaine Philippe Alliet is a four-generation family estate in Cravant-les-Coteaux, a reference point for Cabernet Franc in the Loire appellation of Chinon. This Tradition cuvée comes from younger vines on the area's sandy and gravelly river terraces, soils that drain freely and give a fresher, more direct expression of the grape. The Loire's cool continental climate ripens Cabernet Franc slowly, preserving its high acidity and the leafy, peppery character that defines it. To keep that freshness intact, the wine is fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel rather than oak, a neutral, reductive method that locks in bright primary fruit and the variety's herbal lift with no wood influence. The colour is bright, medium ruby. The nose shows redcurrant, raspberry and red cherry over leafy herb, pepper and a gravelly note. The palate is medium-bodied, with crisp acidity, fine fresh tannins and a clean, savoury finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, and it takes a light chill well in warm weather. It is a classic match for roast and grilled red meats and goat's cheese.
