Christophe Perrot-Minot makes this Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru La Riotte from old Pinot Noir vines on the Côte de Nuits. Aged on its lees, it shows red cherry, rose and a fine, earthy minerality.
Description
Domaine Perrot-Minot is one of the most respected estates of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits, run by Christophe Perrot-Minot since 1993. La Riotte is a Premier Cru in Morey-Saint-Denis, a village long overlooked between its grander neighbours and now valued in its own right. The vineyard sits on the classic Côte de Nuits geology of limestone and marl with a thin, stony topsoil, ground that drains freely and stresses the Pinot Noir into low yields of small, concentrated berries. The cool continental climate and the wide day to night temperature swing protect acidity and give the wine its perfume and lift. The wine is aged on its lees, the spent yeast cells slowly breaking down to add texture and depth while protecting the fruit, with restrained oak so the site shows through. It is bright ruby, the nose offering red cherry, raspberry, rose petal and a forest floor earthiness. The palate is medium bodied and elegant, with fine, silky tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury, mineral finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees in a large Burgundy glass. It is a natural match for game birds and duck.
