Description
Domaine Ostertag was founded in 1966 and is run by André Ostertag, a committed champion of biodynamic farming in Alsace. The estate works 14 hectares spread across 80 parcels grouped into five plots, with quality in the vineyard placed above all else. Pinot Gris is a richer, weightier Alsace variety, a grey pink skinned grape that ripens to give a fuller, more textured white than the region's Riesling. The continental climate of Alsace, sheltered from rain by the Vosges mountains, gives a long, dry, sunny season that builds ripeness and body. Ageing on the fine lees is central here: extended lees contact releases mannoproteins that add weight and a broad, creamy texture to the palate, along with a savoury depth. It is deep gold in the glass. The nose is ripe and gently spiced, with pear, white peach and honey over beeswax and white flowers. The palate is full and rounded, dry, with a ginger lift and a long, textured finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a standard white glass.
