Grand Cras is Mée Godard’s Morgon from a noted lieu-dit in this central Beaujolais cru. From old biodynamic Gamay vines on iron-rich granite, it is a deep, structured red with dark cherry, plum and a stony, savoury depth.
Description
Grand Cras comes from Mée Godard, one of the leading names in Morgon, made from old Gamay vines in a noted lieu-dit of this central Beaujolais cru. Morgon is built on decomposed granite and schist with veins of iron oxide, the distinctive soil the locals call roche pourrie, which gives the cru its depth, firm structure and capacity to age. Mée Godard farms biodynamically and organically, working her plots by hand, and the old vines yield small crops of concentrated fruit while the continental climate and cool nights hold the acidity that keeps the wine fresh. Made in the serious Burgundian style rather than as carbonic Nouveau, the wine is given an extended maceration to draw out colour and structure, the long contact with the skins fixing the deep colour and firm, fine tannins that mark a good Morgon. The colour is deep ruby. The nose offers dark cherry and plum over black pepper, crushed stone and dried herbs. The palate is structured and concentrated, with firm but ripe tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees with roast pork, duck, game or grilled red meat.
