Mée Godard’s Beaujolais-Villages is a Gamay from her biodynamic Beaujolais vineyards, made in the serious mould rather than as Nouveau. Aged twelve months in barrel, it shows fresh cherry, raspberry and a light, savoury structure.
Description
This Beaujolais-Villages comes from Mée Godard, known for her work in the Morgon cru and for treating Gamay as a wine to take seriously rather than rush out as Nouveau. The fruit is grown on the granite and schist soils of the Beaujolais-Villages zone, farmed biodynamically and organically, the well-drained granitic ground giving an aromatic, red-fruited and mineral style of Gamay. The cru's continental climate, with warm days and cool nights, holds the bright acidity that keeps the wine fresh and lifted. Rather than the fast carbonic ferment that gives cheaper Beaujolais its banana-like aromas, this is made in a more traditional way and aged twelve months in barrel, where gentle oxygen exchange through the wood softens the tannins and adds a savoury edge while preserving the fruit. The colour is bright, light ruby. The nose leads with cherry and raspberry over red currant, black pepper and a touch of earth. The palate is fresh and lightly structured, with soft tannins, crisp acidity and a clean, savoury finish. Serve lightly cool at 13 to 15 degrees with roast pork, charcuterie, poultry or a plate of cured meats.
