Description
Domaine Matrot is a fifth generation estate based in Meursault, in the Côte de Beaune, now run by sisters Adèle and Elsa Matrot across 23 hectares. Maranges lies at the southern tip of the Côte de Beaune, where limestone and clay soils and a cool continental climate give red Burgundy its structure and freshness. The grape is Pinot Noir, a thin skinned variety that thrives on the slope's well drained calcareous ground, ripening slowly to keep acidity high and tannins fine. After fermentation the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange through the wood settles the tannins and adds a light spice and toast without masking the fruit. The 2023 is medium bodied, with red cherry, raspberry and red currant, an earthy, savoury Burgundian depth and a subtle oak frame. The palate is fresh and precise, the tannins fine grained, the finish clean. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees in a wide glass. It suits duck, roast poultry and mushroom dishes.
