Domaine Matrot, one of Burgundy’s oldest estates, makes this regional Pinot Noir under AOC Bourgogne. Twelve months in French oak frames bright cherry and red berry fruit, with the earthy, savoury edge the Cote de Beaune is known for.
Description
Domaine Matrot is a long established estate based in Meursault, working across the Cote de Beaune. This Bourgogne Pinot Noir comes from younger vines and declassified parcels on the limestone and clay soils that run through the region. Burgundy is built on the idea of terroir, where each climat carries its own geology and exposure, and the limestone here lends Pinot Noir fine acidity and red fruit clarity while the clay adds a little flesh. The 2023 season gave ripe but balanced fruit, and the estate farms sustainably. The wine spends twelve months in French oak, a portion of it older barrels, so the wood adds structure and a savoury frame rather than overt toast, while slow oxygen exchange through the staves softens the tannins and rounds the texture. The colour is a bright medium ruby. The nose leads with cherry, raspberry and red currant over a forest floor earthiness and a touch of rose. The palate is light to medium bodied, with fresh acidity, gentle tannin and a clean savoury finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, decanted briefly, with roast chicken, duck or mushroom dishes.
