Domaine Leflaive’s Esprit range bottles this Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru Les Jarrons from the Côte de Beaune. The Pinot Noir grows on limestone scree and marl, giving bright cherry, redcurrant and a fine, savoury, peppery character.
Description
Domaine Leflaive, a name made on white Burgundy, extends its Esprit Leflaive range to this red Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru from the Les Jarrons vineyard. Savigny lies in a side valley of the Côte de Beaune, and Les Jarrons sits on the southern slope on limestone scree and iron-rich marl, well-drained soils that give the wine its fresh, lifted character and savoury, mineral edge. The valley channels cool air, and the wide swing between day and night temperatures preserves the acidity and the perfumed, red-fruited aromatics that mark Savigny. Pinot Noir from this site is medium weight by nature. It is matured in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds a light savoury frame without masking the fruit. The 2020 vintage was warm and ripe and gives generous fruit on a classic frame. The colour is medium ruby. The nose shows red cherry, redcurrant and dried rose over black pepper, undergrowth and a touch of leather. The palate is medium bodied and elegant, with fine tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish. Serve at 16 degrees. It suits poultry, game birds and mushroom dishes.
