Domaine Lafage makes Gallica in Roussillon from a Mourvedre, Grenache and Syrah blend. Organically farmed and direct-pressed pale, it shows fresh strawberry, raspberry and grapefruit with a dry, mineral finish in the southern French style.
Description
Domaine Lafage Gallica comes from the Lafage family estate around Mas Miraflors in Canet, in the Cotes-du-Roussillon in southern France. It blends Mourvedre, Grenache, Syrah and Garnacha Gris, all classic Mediterranean varieties of the region, farmed organically. Roussillon is hot and dry, but the estate's vineyards benefit from coastal breezes off the Mediterranean and the cooling Tramontane wind, which dries the bunches, keeps disease pressure low and preserves freshness in a warm climate. The poor, stony soils restrict vigour and concentrate the fruit. To make a pale, dry rosé in this style the grapes are picked early to retain acidity, then gently direct-pressed with minimal skin contact, so only a blush of colour and a fine, fruit-driven character is drawn from the skins. Cool fermentation protects the delicate aromatics. The colour is a pale rose-petal pink. The nose shows fresh strawberry and raspberry with grapefruit and a citrus lift, over white flowers and a herbal edge. The palate is dry, crisp and saline, with a clean mineral finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10C. It suits salads, grilled fish and fresh cheeses, or simply as an aperitif.
