Domaine Lafage Double Passage is a young Roussillon red from VDP des Côtes Catalanes. Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cabernet Sauvignon are picked in two passes for balance, giving ripe black plum, spice and a fresh, concentrated core at fifteen percent.
Description
Domaine Lafage makes Double Passage in VDP des Côtes Catalanes, in French Roussillon close to the Spanish border. The name comes from the two-pass harvest behind the blend: the more acidic Cabernet Sauvignon is picked at the end of September to lock in freshness, while the Grenache and Mourvèdre are left until mid to late October, when they reach their fuller, sweeter ripeness. The vines grow on the warm, stony soils of the Catalan plain, where the Mediterranean sun and the drying tramontane wind concentrate the fruit and keep the grapes healthy. This is a young, unoaked wine, so the focus stays on pure, primary fruit and the savoury garrigue character of the region rather than wood. The staggered picking gives both ripeness and freshness, balancing the fifteen percent alcohol. It pours a vibrant, deep ruby. The nose is fresh and concentrated, with ripe black plum and red berries, cherry, liquorice and a peppery, herbal lift. The palate is full but lively, the ripe fruit met by fresh acidity and soft tannins on a long, savoury finish. Serve at sixteen degrees. Good with grilled meats and spiced dishes.
