Jean-Marc Lafage makes this organic Chardonnay and Viognier blend in Roussillon, southern France, from vineyards set between the sea and the mountains. Barrel-worked, it shows ripe peach, apricot and melon with a soft floral lift and a rounded finish.
Description
Domaine Lafage is the work of Jean-Marc and Eliane Lafage, farming 36 hectares in Roussillon in the far south of France, between the Mediterranean and the mountains. This organic white blends Chardonnay with Viognier across the varied soils Lafage draws on in the Cotes Catalanes. The southern climate is warm and dry, tempered by sea breezes and cooler mountain air, and that balance lets the grapes ripen fully while keeping the wine fresh rather than heavy. Chardonnay brings structure and orchard fruit, Viognier the perfumed stone fruit and floral character. Three months in barrel add texture and a light savoury note through gentle oxygen exchange, without overwhelming the fruit. The colour is bright straw with golden tints. The nose is ripe and aromatic, with white peach, apricot and melon over pear and a floral lift from the Viognier. The palate is medium bodied and rounded, the fruit carried on fresh acidity with a subtle vanilla note and a supple finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a white glass. It suits roast chicken, baked white fish and grilled pork.
