Description
Domaine Jules Desjourneys is the project of Fabien Duperray, a former Burgundy merchant who has become one of the most serious names in Beaujolais. This is a single-variety Gamay from the Morgon cru, made from old vines and aged in the reductive, low-intervention style that sets these wines apart from lighter Beaujolais. Morgon sits on decomposed granite and schist, with the famous Côte du Py capped by weathered volcanic rock; the free-draining soils stress the vines and concentrate the fruit, while granite lends the wine its firm structure and mineral drive. Old vines with deep roots give lower yields and greater depth. With bottle age since 2015, the wine has built savoury, earthy complexity. It shows a deep garnet colour and a fruity nose of cherry and stone fruit over dried flowers and earth. The palate is fine and delicate in texture yet full-bodied and robust, with fresh acidity and a long, structured finish. Serve lightly cool at 15 to 16 degrees. It suits roast poultry, game birds and mushroom dishes.
