Description
Domaine Jules Desjourneys is Fabien Duperray's Beaujolais estate, best known for its serious cru wines, and this Beaujolais-Villages is its more approachable red. It is single-variety Gamay drawn from the 38 villages in the north of the appellation, where the steep slopes sit on granite and are farmed organically. The granite soils drain freely and give the wine its lift and freshness, while the northern hillsides ripen Gamay to bright red fruit without heaviness. Made in a young, fresh style with low intervention in the cellar, the wine keeps its fruit clean and immediate. It shows a bright red colour and a fruity nose of cherry and red berries with a floral note. The palate is juicy and light, with fresh acidity, soft tannins and an easy, drinkable finish. This is Gamay for the table rather than the cellar, best enjoyed young. Serve lightly cool at 13 to 14 degrees, which sharpens the fruit and makes it an easy pour on its own or with lighter food. It works with poultry, pork and charcuterie.
