Domaine Chamonard makes this Morgon cru Beaujolais from Gamay on the granite and schist soils of Beaujolais. The 2021 is fragrant and juicy, with red cherry, red berries, rose and a peppery, earthy lift.
Description
Domaine Joseph Chamonard is a long-standing natural-leaning estate in Morgon, one of the ten Beaujolais crus, working old Gamay vines on the Côte du Py and surrounding slopes. Morgon sits on decomposed granite and schist, with iron-rich blue volcanic rock on the Py that gives the cru its firmer, more structured style and its reputation for ageing. The granite soils warm quickly and drain freely, ripening Gamay while the cool climate keeps the wine fresh and lifted. Beaujolais is traditionally made by semi-carbonic maceration, whole bunches fermenting in carbon dioxide, which draws out bright red fruit and a soft, supple texture with low, fine tannin. The 2021 is aged in oak barrels, which rounds the wine and adds a little savoury depth without masking the fruit. It pours a bright ruby. The nose shows red cherry, red berries and plum, with rose and a peppery, earthy note. The palate is juicy and supple, with soft tannin, fresh acidity and a clean, faintly mineral finish. This is a Morgon built for the table, structured enough to take a light chill or a few years in the cellar. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees. It suits charcuterie and roast meats.
