Domaine Jean Grivot make this Echézeaux Grand Cru in Vosne-Romanée from Pinot Noir on the famous Côte de Nuits slope. Eighteen months in French oak frame a deep, structured red of dark cherry, rose and forest floor.
Description
Domaine Jean Grivot has farmed first-rate terroirs around Vosne-Romanée for more than two hundred years, with Mathilde Grivot now the third generation in charge. Echézeaux is a Grand Cru on the Côte de Nuits, sitting just above the village vineyards where limestone and marl soils give Pinot Noir its depth and precision. The cool continental climate and the slope's eastern aspect ripen the fruit slowly, holding acidity and building the fine, layered tannins that mark Grand Cru Burgundy. The grapes are organically grown, fermented and aged for eighteen months in French oak barrels, where gentle oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds a savoury, spiced frame without masking the fruit. The wine is deep ruby, with a nose of dark cherry, raspberry and rose over earth, oak and a hint of liquorice. The palate is structured and long, with firm but fine tannins, bright acidity and a mineral, savoury finish that rewards cellaring. Serve at 16 degrees, decanted ahead, with game, beef or mushroom dishes.
