Domaine Jean Grivot make this Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from Pinot Noir grown within the walled Côte de Nuits vineyard. Eighteen months in French oak give a deep, powerful red of dark cherry, plum and forest floor.
Description
Domaine Jean Grivot is one of Burgundy's great estates, based in Vosne-Romanée and run today by Mathilde Grivot, the third generation. Clos Vougeot is a large walled Grand Cru on the Côte de Nuits, its clay and limestone soils varying across the slope and giving the wine its weight and depth. The cool continental climate ripens Pinot Noir slowly, holding acidity and developing the firm, fine tannins that mark the cru. The grapes are organically farmed, fermented and aged for eighteen months in French oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange rounds the tannins and adds a savoury, spiced frame while keeping the fruit clear. The 2020 vintage was warm and concentrated, giving a richer, denser style. The wine is deep ruby, with a nose of dark cherry, plum and red berries over earth, leather and oak. The palate is full and structured, with firm tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury, mineral finish built for the cellar. Serve at 16 degrees, decanted well ahead, with roast meats and game.
