Jean Foillard, a leading name in natural Beaujolais and follower of Jules Chauvet, makes this Morgon from Gamay grown on the Corcelette lieu-dit. Made with minimal intervention, it shows bright red fruit, florals and a stony, savoury freshness.
Description
Domaine Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvée Corcelette is a Gamay from the AOC Morgon in Beaujolais. Foillard is one of the four growers who took up the teaching of Jules Chauvet, the figure behind the natural-wine movement in Beaujolais, returning to old viticulture and low-intervention winemaking. Corcelette is a lieu-dit of sandy, granitic soil on the northern side of Morgon, which gives a lighter, more perfumed expression than the iron-rich Côte du Py. The wine is organically and naturally made and certified vegan. Beaujolais is built on whole-bunch and semi-carbonic fermentation, where uncrushed grapes begin fermenting inside their own skins; this intracellular process emphasises bright red fruit and florals while keeping tannin low and the wine fresh. Ageing in older oak adds texture without oak flavour. It is bright ruby with a violet rim. The nose shows raspberry, red cherry, rose and a stony, earthy note. The palate is light to medium bodied, juicy and fresh, with soft tannin, a peppery lift and a clean, mineral finish. Serve cool, at 14 to 15 degrees. It is wonderfully flexible at the table.
