Description
Domaine Jean Foillard is one of the celebrated natural growers of Morgon, a follower of Jules Chauvet whose low-intervention reds helped define modern Beaujolais. This Beaujolais Nouveau is the young primeur, released on the third Thursday of November just weeks after harvest, from Gamay grown on the granite and clay soils south of Burgundy. Nouveau is made by carbonic maceration, where whole bunches ferment inside the uncut berry, a method that gives soft tannin, bright colour and the lifted red-fruit aromatics that mark the style. Foillard works organically, without added yeast and with minimal sulphur, so the wine is a clean, honest expression of the vintage. The colour is a vivid purple. The nose is fresh and juicy, with raspberry, red cherry and a floral note. The palate is light, soft and thirst-quenching, with low tannin and crisp acidity. This is nouveau made with real care, well above the commercial norm. Serve lightly chilled at 13 degrees. It suits charcuterie, roast chicken, cured ham and simple cheese boards.
