Domaine Gramenon makes this natural, biodynamic Syrah in the southern Rhône, from old vines farmed to Demeter standards. Barrel aged and low intervention, it shows dark plum, black pepper, olive and a savoury, peppery grip.
Description
Domaine Gramenon is a leading natural producer in the southern Rhône, based at Montbrison-sur-Lez and farming old vines that have been certified biodynamic to Demeter standards since 2010. L'emouvante is a single-variety Syrah grown on the stony, clay-limestone soils of the Côtes du Rhône, where the warm Mediterranean climate and the drying Mistral wind ripen the fruit fully while keeping it clean and healthy for low-intervention work. Old vines give small yields of concentrated, dark-fruited grapes. The wine is fermented with native yeast and made with minimal additions, then barrel aged so slow oxygen exchange through older wood settles the tannin and adds savoury depth without obvious new-oak flavour. As a natural, biodynamic wine it carries the energy and lift typical of the style. It is organic and vegan. The colour is deep, glossy ruby. The nose shows dark plum and red berries with black pepper, black olive, liquorice and a smoky, garrigue-like herbal edge. The palate is full bodied and intense, with ripe but firm tannin, fresh acidity and a long, peppery, savoury finish that stays bright despite the depth. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. A good match for grilled meat and game.
