Domaine du Pégau, one of the reference names of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, makes this Côtes du Rhône from Grenache and Syrah. Drawn from old vines averaging around forty years, it is a young, unoaked red of ripe red berries, plum and peppery garrigue.
Description
This Côtes du Rhône is the Sélection Laurence Féraud red from Domaine du Pégau, a winery best known as a leading producer of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate works seventy hectares across eleven parcels, with vines averaging around forty years old, and farms in the traditional Rhône manner. The blend is Grenache and Syrah grown on the warm, stony soils of the southern Rhône, where galets and sandy clay store daytime heat and drive the grapes to full ripeness and generous alcohol. Grenache brings the ripe red fruit and warmth, Syrah the colour, pepper and darker structure. Made in a young, fruit forward style without new oak, the wine keeps its varietal character clear and direct. The colour is deep ruby. The nose shows ripe red berries, plum and cherry, with black pepper, dried thyme and a stony, earthy note typical of the region. The palate is generous and rounded, with ripe fruit, gentle tannins and a warm, savoury finish carrying that garrigue character. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It works well with grilled lamb, roast beef, duck and herb roasted pork.
