Domaine du Mortier makes this Cabernet Franc in the Loire, farmed biodynamically and aged a year in oak. Named for the Greek god of wine, it is a smooth, fresh red of red and black fruit with a clear mineral streak.
Description
Domaine du Mortier is a Loire producer working with Cabernet Franc, the red grape that defines the middle Loire around Bourgueil and Chinon. The wine carries the name Dionysos, after the Greek god of wine. Cabernet Franc on the region's gravel and limestone soils gives a medium-bodied, aromatic red marked by red fruit, a leafy herbal character and firm acidity, with a mineral edge that comes from the cool, river-tempered climate. The estate is farmed biodynamically and organically, working without synthetic treatments to keep the soil active. The wine is aged twelve months in oak barrels, a measured maturation that rounds the tannins and adds gentle spice through slow oxygen exchange without covering the fruit. The colour is a bright, medium ruby. The nose shows redcurrant, cherry and dark berry over thyme, crushed herbs and a stony mineral note. The palate is full but fresh, round and juicy, with supple tannin and a clean, savoury finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, lightly chilled in warm weather. It pairs well with roast lamb, grilled meat and herb-led vegetable dishes.
