Domaine des Tourelles makes this Bekaa Valley red from Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan, aged in cement. Grown at altitude under a sunny, dry climate, it is a savoury, herb-edged red of red fruit, pepper and dried herbs.
Description
Domaine des Tourelles is one of the oldest wineries in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, founded in 1868 and now run by descendants of the founding family. This red blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan, the classic mix of the high Bekaa. The valley sits on a plateau more than 900 metres up, where strong daytime sun ripens the grapes fully while cold mountain nights preserve acidity and lift the wine's savoury, herbal character. The dry climate keeps disease low and suits sustainable farming. Ageing in cement rather than oak is the key choice here: the inert tanks let the wine breathe gently without adding wood flavour, so the fruit and the wild herb scrub of the hills come through cleanly while the tannins settle. The colour is deep ruby. The nose shows red and dark berries, plum and black pepper over dried herbs, leather and a stony, earthy edge. The palate is medium to full bodied, with firm but supple tannin, fresh acidity and a long, savoury, herb-tinged finish. Serve at 16 to 18C, decanting half an hour ahead. It suits grilled lamb, spiced kebabs and roast vegetables.
