The Menard family make this Loire red as a tribute to Augustus Menard, an early campaigner for fair pay in the region’s vineyards. A biodynamic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, Gamay and Grolleau, it is light and bright, with fresh strawberry, raspberry and an earthy edge.

Description
Domaine des Sablonnettes farm biodynamically in the Loire and made this red in honour of Augustus Menard, a vineyard labourer who was among the first to demand a fair price for his work. His son Joel and grandson Jeremy carry that spirit into the cellar. The wine blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, Gamay and Grolleau grown on the sand and gravel soils that give the estate its name. Free draining sand warms quickly and limits vigour, which keeps yields low and the fruit bright rather than heavy. Fermentation is natural, with minimal handling and no additions, so the wine keeps the direct, juicy character of the grapes. The colour is a vivid bright red. The nose opens with subtle earthy notes that give way to fresh strawberries and raspberries, with a floral lift. The palate is light and unforced, with crunchy red fruit, gentle tannin and a savoury, mineral finish. At 12.5 percent it stays fresh and drinkable. Serve lightly chilled at around 14 degrees. It suits roast chicken, charcuterie and lighter fish.
