Description
Domaine de Villaine is an organically farmed estate whose reputation rests on precise, terroir-driven whites from the Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise. Les Perrières, in the premier cru village of Saint-Aubin, takes its name from the Old French for a quarry, a reference to the stony, limestone-heavy soils that define the site. These well-drained soils force the vines to work for water and lend the wine its mineral tension and drive. The cool aspect of the slope preserves acidity through the growing season. In the cellar the Chardonnay spends eighteen months in oak barrels, an extended ageing that softens the wine through slow oxygen exchange and builds a rounded, nutty texture, while time on the lees adds weight and a creamy edge. The 2022 is bright gold. The nose leads with white peach, lemon and pear over almond and a gentle oak spice. The palate is full and layered, its ripe fruit anchored by a firm, saline minerality that carries a long finish. Serve at 12 to 14 degrees in a large glass.
