A Guadeloupe vieux from Domaine de Severin carrying a 1980 vintage, distilled from fresh cane juice, woody and ripe with vanilla, papaya and caramel over a fruity, lightly sweet palate, mellow and rounded at 45%.
Description
Domaine de Severin is a Guadeloupe estate distillery, and this Rhum Vieux bears a 1980 vintage, distilled from fresh sugar cane juice on a creole column under the island's looser IGP rather than the Martinique AOC. It is bottled at a comfortable 45%.
The creole column keeps the vegetal cane character that marks agricole, while extended oak has drawn it toward a softer, more mature profile. The nose shows wood, vanilla, papaya and ripe fruit, the palate turns woody and fruity with caramel and a gentle sweetness, and the finish lingers on wood, raisin and vanilla. Unsweetened, it leans more mellow and rounded than sharp, an older-style Guadeloupe agricole for relaxed sipping, where the tropical fruit and oak carry the glass more than any grassy bite.
