Description
Domaine de L'Arlot makes this Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru from Clos des Forets Saint Georges in Burgundy's Cote de Nuits, an estate whose history reaches back to the 18th century. It is now run by winemaker Geraldine Godot, who farms fifteen hectares ecologically, mostly Pinot Noir. The Cote de Nuits gives Burgundy's firmest, most structured reds, and Nuits-Saint-Georges in particular is known for depth and grip. The premier cru vineyard sits on limestone and marl slopes with good exposure, and the wine is aged in French oak barrels, a portion new, which adds structure and a little spice while the fruit stays in the lead. Whole-bunch fermentation is a feature of the estate, adding aromatic lift and firmer tannin. The colour is a deep ruby. The nose shows dark cherry and red berries, rose and violet, with woodsmoke and forest floor. The palate is medium to full bodied, with firm, fine tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish that rewards cellaring. Serve at 16 degrees in a large glass, decanting a young bottle. It suits game, beef and mushroom dishes.
