Description
Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot is a walled vineyard in the Côte de Nuits, in Burgundy, a stretch far better known for red wine, which makes this white a genuine rarity. The monks of Cîteaux identified the plot as distinct as early as 1110 and set it aside for white grapes. Domaine de la Vougeraie farms it organically and plants it to Chardonnay with smaller amounts of Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc. The soils are limestone and marl, which suit white varieties and give the wine its mineral spine and cut, while the field blend adds aromatic breadth beyond straight Chardonnay. The wine spends 15 months in foudre and a further three in stainless steel tank. Ageing in large old wood allows slow oxygen exchange and lees contact that build texture and a nutty, honeyed depth without heavy new-oak flavour, and malolactic fermentation rounds the acidity into something broader and creamier. The colour is bright gold. The nose shows white peach, pear and white flowers over hazelnut, honey and a light vanilla note. The palate is full and layered, the richness held by fresh limestone acidity through a long, savoury finish. Serve at 12 to 13C.

Pairs with lobster, roast chicken and monkfish in a cream or butter sauce, where the weight and nutty depth match the dish. It also suits hard nutty cheeses such as Comté and aged Gruyère.
