Domaine de la Vougeraie makes this village Chambolle-Musigny from Pinot Noir grown between Vougeot and Morey-Saint-Denis. Plots of rare red clay on the Côte de Nuits give a delicate, perfumed red of red cherry, wild strawberry and rose, framed by fine tannins.
Description
Domaine de la Vougeraie Chambolle-Musigny is a single varietal Pinot Noir from the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, France, farmed biodynamically and organically. The fruit is drawn from several plots between Vougeot and Morey-Saint-Denis, including Les Veroilles, Les Argilleres, the well known Les Baudes, Les Condemennes and Les Chardannes, where bands of red clay appear. Red clay is unusual on the Côte de Nuits and tends to give wines of finesse and perfume rather than weight, which is the signature of the Chambolle-Musigny village. The estate works with a portion of whole bunches, around a quarter of the harvest, which lends aromatic lift and a fine savoury thread. Ageing in oak, with only a measured proportion of new wood, allows gentle oxygen exchange that softens the tannins while preserving the fruit. The wine is pale to medium ruby, with a fragrant nose of red cherry, wild strawberry, rose and a hint of forest floor. The palate is delicate and elegant, with red currant fruit, silky tannins, bright acidity and an earthy, mineral finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees in a wide Burgundy glass. A natural match for roast duck and game birds.
