Domaine de la Côte farms Pinot Noir in the cool, fog-swept Sta. Rita Hills of California. This estate red is grown on uplifted ocean soils and barrel aged, giving red cherry, raspberry and a savoury, earthy depth.
Description
Domaine de la Côte sits at the western, coolest edge of the Sta. Rita Hills in California, where the valley opens to the Pacific and morning fog and ocean wind hold back ripening. The estate Pinot Noir grows on ancient uplifted seabed soils, a mix of sand, clay and diatomaceous earth, that stress the vines and give small, concentrated berries with firm natural acidity. The long, cool growing season favours a savoury, structured style of Pinot rather than a ripe, jammy one. The wine is raised in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange through the staves rounds the tannin and adds a fine spice frame without dominating the fruit, while extended time on the lees builds texture across the mid-palate. Expect a translucent ruby red with aromas of red cherry, raspberry and crushed rose, lifted by a smoky, earthy minerality drawn from the cool maritime site. The palate is fine-boned and tightly knit, with bright acidity, silky tannin and a long savoury finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, ideally decanted briefly. It suits roast duck, game birds and mushroom dishes.
