Jacky Blot’s Domaine de la Butte farms organically on south-facing slopes above the Loire at Bourgueil. Le Pied de la Butte is a fresh, savoury Cabernet Franc of red cherry, currant and wild berry with the grape’s leafy, peppery edge.
Description
Domaine de la Butte is the Bourgueil estate of Jacky Blot, whose name translates as The Hill, with sixteen hectares of organically farmed vineyards on south-facing slopes on the right bank of the Loire. Le Pied de la Butte comes from the lower part of the slope, where the alluvial and gravel soils give a lighter, more immediately drinkable expression of Cabernet Franc than the steeper plots. The Loire's cool climate is central to the style, ripening the grape slowly so it keeps its bright acidity and its characteristic leafy, peppery edge alongside the fruit. Fermentation and ageing in wood here is gentle and aimed at preserving freshness rather than building oak flavour. The wine is medium ruby, with a nose of red cherry, red currant and wild berry lifted by dried herbs, crushed pepper and a fresh, earthy note. The palate is light to medium bodied, the tannins fine and the acidity crisp, finishing clean and savoury. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees and it can take a slight chill. It suits roast and grilled meats, charcuterie and goat cheese.
