Sebastian Bobinet farms his grandparents’ Saumur-Champigny vines by biodynamic methods and works the cellar with a natural, low intervention hand. This Cabernet Franc red ages 12 months in used French oak and shows red berry, redcurrant and a peppery, herbal edge.
Description
Domaine Bobinet works in Saumur-Champigny in the Loire, where Sebastian Bobinet took on his maternal grandparents' vineyards in 2003 and was joined in 2011 by sommelier Emeline Calvez. Farming is organic and biodynamic, with natural, low intervention winemaking in the cellar. The wine is pure Cabernet Franc. Saumur-Champigny lies over tuffeau, a soft chalky limestone that drains well and reflects warmth back to the vines, lending Cabernet Franc its bright red fruit, fresh acidity and chalky structure. The cool Loire climate keeps alcohol moderate and preserves the grape's peppery, herbal character. Ageing runs 12 months in used French oak, chosen so the barrel adds texture and gentle oxygen rather than overt wood, keeping the fruit and terroir to the fore. The 2020 is medium bodied, with red berries, redcurrant and plum lifted by black pepper, thyme and a savoury, earthy note. The tannins are fine and the finish fresh. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, with a short decant or a slight chill in warm weather. It works with roast pork, poultry and mushroom dishes.
