Domaine Bobinet farms old Cabernet Franc vines naturally in Saumur-Champigny, in the Loire. Made with minimal intervention and raised in concrete, Hanami is a fresh, perfumed red of red berries, redcurrant and floral lift.
Description
Sebastien Bobinet and Emeline Calvez farm in Saumur-Champigny, in the Loire, working organically and making natural wine with little intervention. Hanami comes from old Cabernet Franc vines, some inherited from Sebastien's grandfather. The appellation sits on tuffeau, the soft chalky limestone of the region, which drains well and lends Loire Cabernet Franc its freshness and mineral line. The cool, temperate Loire climate keeps alcohol moderate, here just 12.5 percent, and preserves the grape's natural acidity and aromatic florality. Winemaking is deliberately gentle. The wine is aged for around four months in concrete vats, an inert material that holds the bright primary fruit and fine texture without adding oak flavour, in keeping with the natural, low-intervention approach. The colour is bright translucent ruby. The nose is perfumed, with fresh red berries, redcurrant, a floral hint of rose and the leafy, peppery character typical of the grape. The palate is light to medium, with crunchy red fruit, gentle tannin, lively acidity and a clean, savoury finish. This is a red to serve slightly cool, at 14 to 16 degrees. It is versatile at the table and pairs with lighter meats and vegetable dishes.
