Description
Sebastien Bobinet began working his grandparents' vineyards in the Loire in 2002, and since sommelier Emeline Calvez joined in 2011 the pair have made pure, additive-free reds under organic, biodynamic and natural methods. Amateus Bobi is Cabernet Franc from Saumur-Champigny, drawn mainly from a plot of vines over 70 years old planted on clay over limestone. That tuffeau limestone bedrock drains freely and reflects a cool, humid, Atlantic-influenced climate, conditions that keep alcohol modest at 12 percent and preserve the grape's naturally high acidity and red-fruited, savoury profile. Old vines add depth and balance at low yields, and the barrel ageing and low-intervention winemaking soften structure while letting the fruit and site show through. Expect a medium red colour and a nose of redcurrant, raspberry and violet framed by graphite, dried herbs and the faint green-pepper note typical of the grape. The palate is fresh and linear, with fine tannin and a stony, savoury finish rather than obvious ripeness or oak. Serve at 16 degrees, and open it an hour ahead. It is a classic partner for roast lamb, beef and duck.
