Description
Irouléguy is a small, still little-known appellation in the French Basque Country, tucked into the western Pyrenees, and Domaine Arretxea is one of its reference estates. Thérèse and Michel Riouspeyrous farm biodynamically, working terraced vineyards on schist and sandstone where altitude and cool nights preserve acidity and give the reds their fresh, savoury character. Tradition is the estate's earlier-drinking cuvée, blending Tannat with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Where their oaked wines are built for the long haul, this one is raised ten months in concrete tanks, an inert vessel that adds no wood flavour and keeps the fruit clean and precise while allowing the wine to settle and soften on its fine lees. The Cabernets temper Tannat's grip and lend redcurrant and leafy lift. Expect a bright ruby colour, a nose of red cherry, redcurrant, cracked pepper and dried herbs, and a medium-bodied palate with fresh acidity, gently textured tannins and an earthy, mineral close. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees with roast pork, grilled lamb chops or a plate of cured meats.
