Doix is a benchmark Priorat from Mas Doix, made from old Garnacha and Carignan on the region’s slate llicorella. Sixteen months in French oak shape a deep, concentrated red with black cherry, liquorice and a mineral, stony grip true to the appellation.
Description
Doix is a red wine from D.O.Q. Priorat, produced by Mas Doix in Poboleda, in Tarragona. The estate was created in 1998 to continue a winemaking tradition that began in 1850 and was broken by phylloxera, after which Garnacha and Carignan were replanted in 1902. The wine comes from old vines on the region's llicorella, a slate soil that drains hard and pushes roots deep, lending Priorat its concentration and stony minerality. The whole vinification is carried out at the winery in a careful, meticulous process, with the wine ageing 16 months in French oak, where the barrel adds cedar and fine spice and slowly knits the tannins through oxygen exchange. It is deep and concentrated, with black cherry, blackberry and plum, liquorice, dried herbs and a graphite, mineral grip. The palate is full bodied and dense, with ripe black fruit, firm, fine-grained tannin and a long, mineral finish that reflects the slate. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees and decant well ahead. It suits roast lamb, grilled and slow-cooked beef and mature hard cheese.
