Description
Distilia bottled this 1989 under its Greenheart label, a single cask drawing the Port Mourant marque from the Uitvlugt operation, named for the greenheart wood of the heritage pot still. At a relaxed 47.3% and three decades old, it trades power for nuance, an unsweetened Demerara that rewards unhurried drinking.
Matured in Port casks, it layers dried fruit and tropical mango over dark chocolate, roasted coffee and firm old oak, with a finish of barrel, dark chocolate, tea and gentle bitterness. The lower strength and long ageing make the alcohol seamless and the texture easy, even as the wood stays serious. This is a contemplative pour for after a heavy meal or with a cigar, a highly regarded old Port Mourant style for drinkers who want fruit and dark wood in equal measure.
